Mexico's President Enrique Peña Nieto promised more than "small sanctions" yesterday after his environmental secretary called information provided to officials following a toxic mining waste spill near the U.S. border "totally false." Grupo Mexico, whose subsidiary Buenavista del Cobre operates the Buenavista mine about 25 miles south of the U.S. border, said in a statement six days after the incident that "unusual rainfall" had caused 40,000 cubic meters of toxic mining acid to spill into the Bacanuchi River in northern Sonora state (Greenwire, Aug. 10).
