Food vendors and restaurants in Malibu, Calif., will have until June 1 to stop offering or sellingrnplastic straws, utensils and stirrers under a ban passed last night by the City Council.rn"This is a community based on its ocean and beaches, and we want to protect those," saidrnCraig George, the city's environmental sustainability director.rn"Individual cities have to decide how they're going to protect the Earth," he said. "We've got tornstart somewhere. If we can start locally, that's the best place to start."rnRoughly 65 food businesses will need to swap out the plastic products for ones made of paper,rnbamboo or wood.rn"This is the right thing to do," said Mayor Rick Mullen. Even if people have to "pay a little morernfor something to do the right thing, it's the right thing to do," he said.
