A hearing today to decide the fate of a Trump-era whistleblower who claims he was punished for raising concerns about a proposed oil and gas project in Wyoming could be a "litmus test" for how the Biden administration treats career Bureau of Land Management employees. So says the government watchdog group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). At issue is the case of Walter Loewen, a BLM environmental analyst in Cheyenne, Wyo., who is being represented by PEER. Loewen in November 2019 raised concerns to "BLM's leadership" over the potential for widespread mortality of raptors and other wildlife from the Converse County oil and gas project, which at the time was under review by BLM as part of an environmental impact statement.
