California Democrats are pushing the White House to restore the state's power under the Clean Air Act to set more stringent vehicle emissions standards. In a letter to President Biden last week, Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla said the administration should "maintain states' authority to set vehicle emissions standards necessary to protect the health and welfare of their people, while also setting strong nationwide standards for greenhouse gas emissions, fuel economy, and zeroemission vehicles." President Trump repealed California's Clean Air Act waiver and ripped up Obama-era fuel economy standards for cars, prompting outrage and lawsuits from state officials and environmental advocates.
