Energy and Commerce Committee Democratic and Republican leaders sent agencies a letter this morning seeking additional information about their exposure to the SolarWinds hack. With signatures from the chair and ranking member of the full committee and every subcommittee, the letter marks a rare show of unity as E&C looks to scrutinize one of the worst publicly acknowledged hacks against the United States. The lawmakers are seeking information from EPA and the departments of Energy, Commerce, and Health and Human Services. "Because the SolarWinds attack has potentially affected a wide array of federal agencies and programs, the Committee is seeking to gain a fuller understanding of the scope of the attack and actions being taken to mitigate its effects," the lawmakers wrote. The SolarWinds hack came to light in December as a cyberespionage campaign largely attributed to Russia that breached at least nine federal agencies, although the full extent of the problem is not yet publicly known. News reports said DOE and the National Nuclear Security Administration were among the targets.
