Fla. reactor shutdowns spark NRC inspection

Federal nuclear regulators are investigating why a Florida Power & Light Co. reactor had to be shut down three times in four days last month. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced the start of a special inspection yesterday at FPL's Turkey Point site in Miami-Dade County after Unit 3 had three unplanned shutdowns between Aug. 17-20. Five NRC inspectors will visit the site and release a report 45 days after that. The Turkey Point reactors built along Biscayne Bay last year received NRC's approval to run an unprecedented 80 years (Energywire, Dec. 6, 2019). Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette visited Turkey Point in June to discuss hurricane preparedness and response and hardening the power grid against natural disasters. Florida is a hurricane magnet and a laboratory for climate change impacts, particularly sea-level rise.
