Fishing vessel owner to pay $1M for spill

The owner and operator of a pair of fishing ships will pay a $1 million fine and serve fiveyears of probation for spilling an oily substance into waters off the coast ofMassachusetts.As part of a deal with the Justice Department's environment division, Sea Harvest Inc.and Fishing Vessel Enterprises Inc. will also have to introduce a compliance plan fortheir fleet of commercial fishing vessels."The laws that govern the discharge of oily bilge waste from vessels have been on thebooks for decades," Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Bossert Clark, head of DOJ'sEnvironment and Natural Resources Division, said in a statement yesterday.
