摘要

At a meeting in Monterrey, Mexico last month, convened to take forward the climate action plan proposed at last year's Gleneagles G8 summit, representatives of 20 of the world's most polluting nations were told by UK government representatives to prepare for decades of climate turmoil. Sir David King, the UK Government's Chief Scientific Adviser, warned: 'Because we've raised the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere so quickly, the earth's climate system is falling behind. This is way in excess of anything the planet has known, probably for 45 million years.' Margaret Beckett, the UK Foreign Secretary, said that adapting energy policies now would be 'absolutely critical' for the future of the planet. 'The very foundations of how we live must be transformed.'
