In March, the Swiss Parliament voted for a three year extension of the country's existing moratorium on the cultivation of genetically modified plants in direct response to the EU's recent approval of a GM potato. Though in theory, the potato could now be grown across the EU, the governments of Greece, Austria, Luxembourg, Italy, Hungary and France have publicly announced that they will not allow the cultivation of the potato in their countries. Switzerland has been GMO-free since 2005, and the ban will now extend until 2013 at the earliest.
