Greek LiteraturenSince I have sometimes said disparaging things about collective volumes as a genre, Inshould in fairness begin by acknowledging two outstanding examples. The quality ofnthe individual contributions is, of course, always crucial: but something more isnneeded. In Plato and Hesiod,1 the secret of success is a topic of well-defi ned scopen(though not without broader consequences) that has received surprisingly littlenattention. The seven chapters of Part I give overviews of Plato’s relationship to Hesiod,nand place this in the context of Hesiod’s reception in the period. The eight chaptersnof Part II study individual dialogues in more detail, the highlight of this section beingnan extremely rich quartet of papers on Timaeus; Symposium, Republic, and Politicus alsonreceive attention. The editors deserve credit for the editorial care that has evidentlynbeen invested in the volume, as well as for the fruitful choice of topic.
