To help keep pace with its printing capacity, Bel-mont, Mass.-based Bel-mont Printing Company recently purchased a Vijuk 321-T saddle stitching system. Though saddle stitching had long been a part of Belmont's bindery offerings, says company owner Richard Garfield, the company's finishing operation lagged behind the many improvements it had made in prepress and press operations over the years. "Before we purchased the Vijuk machine," he relates, "collating had always been performed by hand as a separate step, with books then being stitched and, for the most part, trimmed as a separate step as well. It was extremely labor intensive, and quality was always a concern because we often brought in temporary employees during busy periods."
