In December 2011, Iran captured a U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) surveillance drone with only minor damage to the undercarriage of the drone, likely due to a rough landing when captured. An Iranian engineer claimed in an interview that "Iran managed to jam the drone's communication links to American operators" causing the drone to shift into an autopilot mode that relies solely on GPS to guide itself back to its home base in Afghanistan.
