Suez-GDF merger ruffles feathers in Brussels, Rome

French partially privatized gas utility Gaz de France launched a surprise friendly bid for water and energy giant Suez February 26. The two are seeking to merge to create an international utilities giant with activities in water, electricity and gas spanning the globe. But the proposed merger has met with concern among European Union officials in Brussels, and is widely seen as defensive move to keep Suez in French ownership after rival French water utility Veolia and Italian electricity utility Enel announced their intention to launch a joint bid for Suez late February.
