Greater power, speed in upcoming wireless charging modules

Manufacturers of wireless charging modules in China are focusing on the rollout of fast-charging types with a rated power above 20W. They are eyeing the intersecting 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that will drive trends in mobile and wearable electronics, smart home systems, robotics and electric vehicles. From this, the expected product announcements will be highlighting more functionality, which corresponds to a higher need for power.Some Chinese suppliers have started introducing 20W-rated wireless charging modules with 12 to 15VDC input voltage, 5 to 12VDC output voltage and 1.6A maximum current at 12VDC, 20W. These units have 50 to 150kHz operating frequency and up to 10mm effective range.Mainstream selections currently have 5 or 7V input voltage and 15W maximum rated power. These are compliant with Qi, PMA and A4WP standards, with Qi units dominating supply.Companies are continuing to offer customization services. This is because they are generating a sizeable amount of business from this strategy as such orders represent between 30 and 70 percent of total shipments.
