Reaching the poor with health, nutrition and population services: What works, what doesn't and why

'What is poverty?' is the basic question behind the debate that has arisen in many forums, publications and studies. Addressing this issue is critical, especially since reduction of poverty is the first objective of the Millennium Development Goals. But the answer will depend on who asks the question or responds and what the question means across countries and cultures.rnReaching the poor with health, nutrition and population services is a perpendicular drive into this question. It is a compendium of governmental and non-governmental experiences delivered across several developing countries. This conjunction brings to the reader different views and experiments on facing the challenge of improving health, nutrition and population services among the poor. The authors stressed that the objectives of Reaching the poor programme are: (1) 'increase awareness that many programmes do not effectively reach the poor', and, much more important, authors said; (2) 'identify programmes that are successful in serving disadvantaged groups' (p.11).
