2020 Trends to Watch: Facebook's Social Strategies

Facebook touches on almost every aspect of consumer activity, and therefore, its plans are a major strategic consideration for companies in sectors as diverse as advertising, messaging, games, digital assistants, video, and e-commerce. This report will detail Facebook's major strategies for 2020 and provide recommendations for how content providers, technology vendors, and service providers and platforms can take advantage of Facebook's plans and the disruption they will cause to grow their own revenue. Facebook is the 800lb gorilla in the social, messaging, and advertising space. Its forays into areas such as video and games will cause headaches for companies in those markets. This report identifies three key expected developments in Facebook's 2020 strategies that will affect businesses in the ecommerce, content, and messaging spaces. First, Facebook's Calibra app represents both an opportunity and a challenge to payments providers as well as to service providers in the e-commerce space. Second, its merging of messaging app infrastructure and branding opens opportunities for rival messaging apps and operators alike, and finally, its strategy to combat "fake news" on the platform opens doors for traditional news publishers and broadcasters. Figure 1 provides an overview of Facebook's market position relative to its key social media competitors.
