CRANFIELD SEQUESTRATION PROJECT PASSES 1 MILLION-TON MILESTONE

The United States' Cranfield oilfield last week became just one of five projects worldwide to have sequestered more than 1 million tons of carbon dioxide. Cranfield, located in Southeastern Mississippi, is the site of a CO_2 sequestration demonstration project managed by the Department of Energy's Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership-one of seven regional partnerships in the United States currently experimenting with CO_2 storage. Researchers began pumping CO_2 into Cranfield in July 2008 and plan to finish injection of 1.5 million tons of CO_2 by the end of 2009, using a "stacked" sequestration process for storing the CO_2.
