It has been many years since a specialist book on onshore geotechnical engineering has been released onto the market, and so this is a very timely contribution. The volume of activity, particularly research activity, on offshore geotechnical problems has increased substantially over the past 15 years. The proliferation of output from this work at various conferences and in journals has meant that it is not easy for a beginner to find the starting point! Indeed, the topic is so broad that it is difficult to know where a book might start or finish. Dean has made a very good attempt at this with his book, which is written in a readable and logical format, and with plenty of illustrations. I enjoyed looking through it.
