Reinforcement design for construction of cover soil over soft sludge

This paper presents a design procedure for selecting the reinforcement tensile strengthnand strain that are required for the construction of cover soils over soft low-permeability sludgenusing the ‘finger fill soil placement technique’, which consists in placing a high-strengthnreinforcement over the soft, low-permeability sludge and building parallel narrow berms over thenreinforcement. The design procedure described in this paper: (1) considers the proposed constructionnsequence; (2) takes advantage of the ability of the high-strength reinforcement to withstand tensilenstresses; and (3) considers the large vertical displacement due to the applied load. The proposedndesign procedure allows the design engineer to select the reinforcement characteristics as well asnthe initial berm thickness and spacing.
