FROM THE OTHER SIDE: A column by Lee Lawyer with stories about geophysics and geophysicists

Seventy-five years ago on 11 March 1930, 29 men and one woman met for lunch in Houston, USA, to form the Society of Economic Geophysicists. Two name changes later, they settled on the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. The woman was Elizabeth Stiles who was with the Geophysical Research Corporation (aka GRC, a sub-sidiary of Amerada) when she joined SEG. Donald Barton was the first president and served two terms. Paul Weaver was the next president. These two men later served as AAPG presidents and remain the only two to ever hold both offices. Those were the good old days.
