Islands at Risk? Environments, Economies and Contemporary Change

Over the past 50 years or so, a period within which many other geographical phenomena have been drawn into the spotlight of rational definition and explanation, islands continue to have something of a rough deal. An island is still not something readily definable - why in some classifications, for instance, is Antigua an island but not Australia? Islands are often uncritically labelled 'remote', 'isolated', even 'small' as though everyone agrees on the meanings of these terms and their lack of subjective or pejorative overtones.
