Why I want to be a South African geographer: A response to Hammett's (2012) 'W(h)ither South African human geography?'

It is an exciting time to be a geographer in South Africa. As an American who has spent most of the last 10 years as a student, researcher, lecturer, and activist here, I was both intrigued and frustrated by Hammett's recently published article in Ceoforum on the state of South African geography. My concern, and that of many others I discussed this article with, is-I hope to show- not rooted in sensitive egos regarding criticism or outside perspective. It is a frustration with evaluating South African geography according to Anglo-American expectations rather than examining its contributions on its own terms.
