Traditionally, nonwovens, plastic films, metal films and papers were taken offline and wound off a parent roll, slit lengthwise by an appropriate number of knives set to the desired width of the strip and then wound on one winding shaft, basically as parallel strip slices. This technology and accompanying equipment are still used today in relatively slow processes, e.g. for producing extremely narrow strips. The lengths that can be achieved with this process are often insufficient for applications in hygiene, medical, incontinence or diaper products.
