What's new in carbon fiber recycling?

The first carbon fibers - categorized as man-made fibers made from inorganic polymers - were produced as early as 1880 by carbonizing cotton and linen and used as light bulb resistors. In 1960, it was discovered that carbon filaments can be produced by exposing the base filaments to tensile strain during the high temperature treatment. As from 1980, polyacrylonitrile has been used as a base fiber; energy intensive carbon fiber production (Table 1) is responsible for the high fiber price.
