Ben haggard grew up in the business, but he says that these days, he's no longer satisfied with the controlling, static nature of conventional garden design. A founding member of the 13-year-old Regenesis Group, self-styled apostles of "regenerative design," Haggard comes of pioneer stock: In 1978, his stepmother, Gail, started Plants of the Southwest, one of the first native-plants nursery in New Mexico, and Ben remembers harvesting seed as a teenager, learning the ecosystems of the Santa Fe area firsthand. His undergraduate degree in philosophy and literature was not, according to Haggard, an adolescent rebellion, nor was the subsequent period of studying painting in Provence. His studies and the family passion for horticulture "seemed consistent to me, just not obviously so."
