ALVARO SIZA: Galician Center of Contemporary Art

This contemporary art museum is located in the old town of Santiago de Compostela, the final stop on the Christian pilgrimage route, on an extensive site that was once the orchard of a convent. Inspired by the historical and urban context of the surrounding area, the two L-shaped, three-story volumes are arranged at an angle that encroaches on each other, with a triangular atrium in the middle. Circulation is built around the atrium and climbs along the gallery. The building's exterior is made of granite in consideration of the local climate, tradition, and longevity of the building. The concrete interior space of the museum is painted white and neutrally abstracted to accommodate contemporary art exhibits, and the floors are paved with white marble and wood. Each area is richly characterized by a variety of artificial and natural lighting in the galleries.
