Unlike 2002, the coming year offers no major European elections to roil continental markets. But it does serve up plenty of tradable fare, including a constitutional convention, a raging battle over deficits and a fundamental questioning of everything the EU stands for. German comedian Harold Schmidt recently quipped that the relationship of his country's embattled chancellor with the United States actually was in pretty good shape ― at least compared to his relationship with Germany. It's the kind of observation that American traders might want to keep in mind as they look for greener pastures in these times of domestic uncertainty.
