Transient thermal shock behavior of W-Zr/Sc_2O_3 composites prepared via spark plasma sintering

W-Zr/Sc2O3 composites with different Zr doping content were produced through powder metallurgy (PM) and subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1700 degrees C. The thermal conductivity of composites decreased initially and then increased as the Zr content increased. Afterwards, the thermal shock behavior of W-Zr/Sc2O3 composites under transient event was investigated. Repeated electron irradiations cause significant surface roughening, cracks, and extruded structures. These surface modifications are attributed to plastic deformation and thermal fatigue. Results reveal that W-1%vol Zr/2%vol Sc2O3 has superior thermal properties and great resistance to surface modifications under repeated high heat-load.
