In today's complex and changing healthcare environment, engaged and effective board governance is critical. The transition from rubber-stamping reports and privilege appointments to engagement and competencies is occurring in not-for-profit and for-profit hospitals and health systems alike. The impact of healthcare reform has been a significant precipitating factor in the transitional process and is causing a seismic shift in the focus, responsibilities, functions, and composition of boards.
