This study examined the variability of trace elements composition and bioconcentration potential of Yellow-cracking Bolete, Xerocomus subtomentosus, in total 44 mushrooms collected from the same area over three years (2001-2003). The trace elements such as Ag, Al, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, Sr and Zn were determined in the caps and stipes of fruiting bodies and top soils by validated methods, using CV-AAS for mercury and ICP-AES for other elements in the final measurements. For caps, only the contents of Co and Cr remained constant, the concentrations of Hg, Rb, Ag, Al, Fe, Na and Ni decreased (p<0.05; ANOVA), while the concentrations of Ba, Ca, Cd, Cu, K, Mg, Mn, P, Pb, Sr and Zn peaked in 2002. For stipes, the concentrations of Hg, Rb and K decreased; Al, Mg and Zn increased and for Ba, Ca, Fe, Sr, Mn and Na there was no definite order (p<0.05; ANOVA). The bioconcentration factor values for caps remained constant over the three years for Ag, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni and Rb (p>0.05; Kruskal-Wallis test), while they varied for Al, Ba, Co, Hg, K, P, Sr and Zn (p<0.05; Kruskal-Wallis test).
