The aim of this study was to estimate the content of Cd and Pb in women with salivary gland tumors (SGT) and salivary gland inflammatory disease (SGID). The study was carried out on 51 women with benign SGT and SGID, 23 subjects served as a control group. Cd and Pb content of blood and saliva were estimated using the electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry with Zeeman background correction (Hitachi, Japan). The concentration of Cd in blood of patients with SGT or SGID (3.650±3.20μg/L, 4.389±2.80μg/L respectively) compared to the control group (1.953±1.21μg/L) was significantly higher. The content of Cd in the saliva of women with SGT (0.628±0.56μg/g of protein) or SGID (0.735±0.65 μg/g of protein) was significantly higher as compared to the control subjects (0.208±0.16μg/g of protein). The average level of Pb in blood of women with SGT, SGID and control group were: 41.992 ± 28.45μg/L, 23.259 ± 11.75μg/L and 28.348 ± 24.07μg/L respectively. The contents of Pb in saliva of the studied patients with SGT (3.576±4.86μg/g of protein), SGID (2.509±2.06 μg/g of protein) and control materials (3.925±3.08μg/g of protein) were not significantly different.High concentration of cadmium (Cd), not lead (Pb) in blood and saliva, is associated with salivary gland diseases.
