For a Chief Executive who has just completed one of the most talked-about corporate transformations in Europe, Nokia's Jorma Ollila is hardly gloating. The Finnish company is now second only to Motorola in the fast-growing mobile-phone industry. But of late, a host of new forces is turning the battle for cellular business into a bloody free-for-all. Telecommunications technology continues to shift at a rapid pace, growth in the important U.S. market has slowed, and the product is becoming a commodity—some phones are being, practically given away as promotions for signing up for cellular service with big providers like AT&T and Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile.
