"The premise that contingency recruiters are money-grubbing bounders who willingly mislead hordes of innocent candidates, while retained recruiters patiently practice their unique brand of philanthropy, is ridiculous." So writes Ray Bedingfield, president of the Woodmoor Group, a headhunting firm based in Monument, Colo., in response to comments in this space (Oct. 15) to the effect that recruiters who work on contingency (getting paid nothing until a given job is filled) might be inspired to exaggerate the wonderfulness of a job when describing it to candidates. He adds, "We do almost half our business cleaning up after the exalted retained recruiters out there."
