To most of us, he was simply "Wlad". Of course, I can add nothing that comes close to the personal feelings that Andrzej Tarlecki expresses in his moving obituary notice that heads the contents of this edition of our journal. But it was one of Wlad's charms that anyone who met him more than once or twice felt a very close link with him as a wise and wily friend. Certainly for me, there was more than one occasion when his freely shared experience of life helped me navigate a difficult decision process.
