British Ministry of Defense to Order 600 New Armored Vehicles

The U.K. is set to invest GBP500 million ($922 million) on the purchase of 600 mine-protected, heavy-armored vehicles for its troops in Afghanistan. The vehicles will be able to sustain attacks by roadside bombs and landmines, an increasingly common form of attack as Taliban and tribal forces continue to step up their efforts against NATO forces in the Afghan theater. The coming order - being negotiated by Defense Secretary Des Browne with the U.K. Treasury - will partly replace the lightly armored "Snatch" Land Rovers in use in Afghanistan.
