Algeria (Analysis)

A former French colony that fought a relentless and aggressive war of liberation from its colonial overlord, Algeria won its independence in July 1962. As an unyielding colonial power, France launched one of the most brutal wars in contemporary history against the Algerian population, at the cost of nearly a million lives. The prolonged war brought down the Fourth Republic and divided the French in much the same way the Vietnam War caused divisions among Americans. Until recently, the French refused to even acknowledge Algeria's 1954-1962 "war of independence," a war that France failed to win despite the ruthlessness with which it was waged by French military and security forces.
