The sultanate of Oman occupies a strategic location on the Arabian Peninsula and the southern shore of the Strait of Hormuz. With a coastline extending 2,092 kilometers, Oman is significant because the Strait of Hormuz is a key maritime chokepoint for oil outflows from the Persian Gulf oil producers, with these outflows accounting for roughly two-fifths of the oil traded worldwide. Officially known as "Muscat and Oman" until 1970, the sultanate has had a special relationship with the U.K. since the 19th century. The country gained full independence in December 1951 under a treaty of friendship with the U.K. Despite a break from its colonial past, Oman maintains its strong political and military ties to the U.K.
