Overview: Security Environment. In the last decade, the Algerian security environment has shifted from being dominated by a violent civil war to balancing lingering internal instability with the need to project regional influence and improve international relations. As the Algerian security environment has evolved, so have the challenges Algeria faces. The domestic insurgency the country faced during the civil war has been transformed into a regional terrorist network throughout northern Africa. Under the banner of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), this new terrorist group represents a very real threat to the nation's economic and security interests at a time when the Algerian security services are moving toward a more traditional force structure.
