The poorest country in the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen suffers from political corruption, tribal loyalties, and high levels of unemployment. Yemen faces security threats not only from its armed, tribally affiliated populace but also from terrorist groups aligned with al-Qaeda and from the Houthi rebellion in the north. The seriousness of these threats is underscored by the state of political flux the country still finds itself in after President Ali Abdullah Saleh signed an immunity deal sparing him from prosecution over a violent crackdown on a popular uprising in 2011. Unfortunately, even under the new leadership of former Vice President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi, it is unlikely to heal the many wounds bleeding Yemen, and there remains a threat that the security environment will deteriorate to the point of fracturing the country completely.
