Niger's military answers directly to the president, who is also the commander in chief of the armed forces. The Army is deployed across three military districts. Its units comprise seven infantry companies, four armored recce squadrons, one engineer company, two para-commando companies, and one counterterrorist company. The Air Force consists of around 100 personnel and operates a small fleet of transports, utility/liaison aircraft, and helicopters. Air bases are located at Niamey, Agadez, Tahoua, and Maradi. Niger's military personnel are deployed with the following U.N. peacekeeping missions: three military observers with MINUSCA (Central African Republic) and 850 troops and two observers with MINUSMA (Mali).
