Boom! the earth blew apart as hot gas and ash shot out of the volcano's throat in a thunderous roar. Glowing boulders, some the size of television sets, exploded into the sky. Frantic and overwhelmed, Stanley Williams raced down the cone, trying to flee danger. Then a rock crashed into his head, knocking him sideways and caving in his skull. The geologist stumbled to his feet, only to be shot down by red-hot shrapnel that broke his legs and set his clothes on fire. Just a few yards away lay his Colombian colleague, Jose Aries Zapata—bloody, contorted, dead.
