Lloyd forcellini wasn't sure what to make of the call he received in January from someone representing "MS Studios." The person asked Forcellini, vice president of New York-based DuArt Digital Laboratories, whether he might be interested in using a new technology to create a digital master of the horror flick Wendigo, about a gruesome Native American spirit that comes to life. The New York film production shop had originally worked on the movie, but Forcellini was wary after learning the real identity of MS Studios: Microsoft. The software behemoth wanted Forcellini to quietly help it develop a next-generation digital media platform, then code-named "Corona," now known by the clunky title of Windows Media 9 Series. The digital remaster would be a showpiece for the new technology, which Microsoft claims can create video resolution five times clearer than a DVD and provide almost-instant streaming video.
