We glance down at my tray table and I nod in agreement: For years I've been carrying the lightest laptops I can find. Now the odds of your hearing those dreaded words are getting higher. Ultralight notebooks, long the rage in Asia, are beginning to catch on here. But as with dieting, it's possible to go too far. Exhibit A: Sony's almost unimaginably skinny new VGN-X505ZP, whose elegant 1.85-pound nickel-carbon-composite body tapers from .83 inches to a razor-thin .38. Alas, in a world with better alternatives only slightly more zaftig, the X505 seems more anorexic than beautiful―particularly at the supermodel price of $3,000.
