John Hardy Cuff

As an art student in Bali in the 1970s, John Hardy learned silversmithing from the heirs of goldsmiths to one of the royal courts. Combining their methods—hammering metal to soften it, forming it into beads or wire, and weaving it into mesh or chains—with a modern sensibility led him to create exotic but timeless jewelry, and quickly earned him a following after he launched his company in 1989. Hardy retired last year, but creative director and head designer Guy Bedarida is perpetuating his vision, producing contemporary pieces with island motifs, such as the iconic Hardy dot pattern, based on the traditional technique of granulation (forming metal into tiny balls and fusing them to a surface).
