Warren Buffett and Bill Gates

Gates has given away more than three times as much as his good friend Warren Buffett. But the Berkshire Hathaway chairman, who only embraced philanthropy in 2006 at Gates' urging, is closing the gap. Last year Buffett donated $1.9 billion to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Now they are teaming up to get other wealthy tycoons to give more. So far 69 have pledged in writing to give away at least half their fortunes, either during their lifetimes or after death. No one has yet hit that mark, although at least half a dozen, including the Sandlers, James Stowers and Jon Huntsman, did so prior to signing the pledge.
