The gas engine wasn't always king. Back in 1900 it was a third-place option. Carmakers that year produced 1,600 steam-powered models, 1,575 electric and only 936 powered by internal combustion. "You can't get people to sit over an explosion," said Colonel Albert Pope, who ran the biggest automaker before the turn of the last century.
