John Abele, cofounder of Boston Scientific, a pioneer developer of medical devices and a former member of The Forbes 400, leaves his front door with its dragonfly knocker unlocked. He welcomes me into the unpretentious frame house he and his wife, Mary, built on a knoll of Meach Cove Farms, a 1, 000-acre Shelburne, Vt property they bought in 1997. The picture windows frame a rolling landscape planted with maple trees and organic soybean and hay, leading down to a half-mile of Lake Champlain waterfront, with the Adirondack Mountains in the distance. A breeze sets off dolphin-shaped chimes in the great room.
