North korea's recent test of a nuglear bomb revealed an unfortunate truth about American intelligence: It's getting harder to detect mischief by rogue states such as North Korea. Defectors from ostracized regimes like North Korea and Iran aren't exactly spilling the beans. And billion-dollar spy satellites aren't as effective as they might once have been. Pyongyang pushed its test deep underground, limiting the ability of U.S. satellites to detect movement. Also, China, North Korea, Iran and other powers have figured out the orbit of a number of pricey photoreconnaissance satellites and can hide assets when they know they're being watched, former government officials acknowledge.
