The noncommercial foodservice industry was saddened last month by the death of one of the more well-known and well-respected figures in the business, Mary Hofer. Although she was neither operator nor supplier, Mary could hardly be considered to have been on the periphery of the industry, because she always threw herself wholeheartedly into this business. Her passing at age 60 definitely has robbed the industry of one of its most passionate and outspoken supporters. When I joined Food Management magazine in late 1984 as associate editor, our publisher was Mary Hofer. She was a gregarious woman, passionate about the industry we covered and always eager to bring together operators and suppliers in mutual exchanges of ideas. Her knowledge of the business and her contacts often helped smooth the path for this young reporter as he learned to cover the industry.
