Radio frequency identification (RFID) has been around for a few years now. Although it is arguably better known for its role in keeping tabs on paroled prisoners or for identifying ownership of lost pets and stolen cars, RFID technology also has an invaluable part to play in the logistics arena. RFID tags allow the user to track the movements of loaded containers and pallets and identify contents, destination and ownership - enabling fast and accurate inventory control of both contents and carrier. They offer a number of advantages over bar code labeling and other traditional forms of identification; tags are far less susceptible to damage, they cannot be marked or defaced, access can be protected by a security code and re-recordable tags allow information to be continually updated. Typical applications include the management of returnable containers, stock management, order picking and tracking goods from supplier to final destination. RFID systems have been developed to meet a combination of user needs for container, box pool or pallet management: 1. Identification and control of each container or pallet 2. Control over planning, location and return cycle of containers or pallets between supplier and customer 3. Precise record of container or pallet rotation - time in and time out 4. Detailed tracing records for the contents of each container or pallet 5. Real-time inventory and reporting on the location and user of each container or pallet 6. Recording details of industrial washing and sanitary control.
